Omkara, being the Adaptation of Shakespeare Othello is interesting in its own way. The movie is set in a small town of Uttar Pradesh where Omi (Ajay Devgn) abducts his lady love, Dolly ( Kareena Kapoor) to marry her. On the other side, Langda Tyagi (Saif Ali Khan) is devastated that Omi, his brother, gave his power to Kesa ( Vivek Oberoi), instead of him.

The film showcases real life events as well as extreme violence. The soft romance of Dolly and Omi makes the attempt to create balance between the tragic incidents. There are instances when Omi reconsiders his trust in Kesu, whereas Kesu becomes aware of Langda’s cruel intentions.Langda is one of the greatest villains in the history of Indian cinema, in my opinion. His expressions and dialogue delivery makes him more significant than anyone.

The narrative commences when we gain insight into Langda Tyagi’s inner world, which is roiling with feelings of betrayal and agony. Then, as a result of the mechanism of his evil mind, we hypnotically follow Langda as he descends into absolute evil. Eventually, the mystery overcomes our anguish for Omi and Dolly’s star-crossed love.
The character of Kareena Kapoor, even if it has very limited screen time, has a significance in our minds. After re-watching it after so many years, it is evident that a woman has to prove her loyalty in each part of her life. Langda planted the seeds of doubt in Omi’s mind, that Dolly and Kesu might be having an affair. In the diplomacy of Langda and the conflict between the three men, it is Dolly who suffers. It is Dolly who has to prove her love again and again.

A significant commentary on the condition of women in traditional India is formed by Dolly’s innocence, vulnerability, and unfailing faith in the man she loves, combined with Indu’s fury. As much as they have been raised to be nurturers, it serves as a reminder that, in both their families of origin and the families they marry into, they frequently lack a true home and may constantly feel alienated. Omkara gives Dolly two options at the end of the movie: either she confesses to an affair she never had or she dies. This is because Omkara’s insecurity turns deadly. She begs for the suffering to stop at this instant since she has realized she is completely alone after giving her all to a man.
Watching the movie again after 19 long years, did change our thoughts regarding it. The fact that love and betrayal is a part of everyone’s life. That women have to prove themselves in a lot of ways to men, makes us rethink about freedom.
